Who is the woman who was drunk from the blood of the saints?

Babylon drunk with the blood of Christians

“And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.” Revelation 17:6

This refers to the zeal with which the people killed Christians. It is the attitude of the people that is so care free, that John admired how they can be this way, with doom looming over their heads.

The context of this is seen in Verse Three..

“So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns” Revelation 17:3

The “woman” is Babylon, who is also referred to as the Apostate Church, because she causes man to fall away from the faith of God and into idolatry. The woman is also called the Harlot and the Whore, which carry the same meanings.

“Harlot” in Hebrew is the word “Zanah” meaning to cause to commit fornication, idolatry continually.

The Greek word for Harlot is “Porne”/ Por-nay, meaning idolater or harlot. The color “scarlet” represents royalty, the right to rule.

Babylon

The “Beast” reference is the False Prophet who rules Babylon in appearance only.

“full of names of blasphemy”

The Beast speaks much evil against God.

“Having seven heads”
